How to Draw on a Computer with a Mouse?

Drawing on a computer has reached a new height with a lot of potential for digital art.

Though it is mainly done by newbies in digital art and those who like to draw as a hobby, it is also done by some experts who like to draw on tablets with a stylus.

It can be considered as a beginner-level skill a newbie artist can have before moving onto the specialized drawing tabs.

The drawing software on the computer takes care of the image dimensions, size, symmetry, and not to mention the complex drawing techniques which are made easier than drawing by hand. It can be a little tricky to draw using a mouse but won’t be a problem once you get used to it.

You only have to follow a few simple steps to get started.

Steps to Draw on a Computer with a Mouse

Step 1 – Open Paint

The first thing you have to do is open “paint”, a program that is incorporated in Windows. Using the mouse, click on “Windows” in the bar at the bottom of the screen. In the search bar, type “paint” and press “Enter”.

Now that you have opened “paint”, you only have some simple steps to learn. Follow them, and you are good to go.Oh! you can change the mouse sensitivity beforehand, if you’re not comfortable with the current setting.

Step 2 – Select Your Lines

Click on the ‘pencil’ symbol in the toolbar. Then select the thickness of the line. A line with the pencil gives you a thin line with sharp edges. Another option is to choose the paintbrush if you opt for a thicker line and softer edges.

Other than free-hand lines, you can also go for various shapes such as a triangle, circle, rectangle, etc.

Step 3 – Draw the Line

After selecting the line or shape, click the left button of the mouse on an area of the blank page. Without letting go of the button, move the mouse on the direction you want. Let go of the button when you finish drawing the line.

Repeat the same process if you want to go with the shapes. The right or left buttons mentioned above are of a traditional mouse. This is reversed in case of a pocket mouse in which the ‘left’ button is at the index finger, and the ‘right’ button is on the left side of the device under the thumb.

A pocket mouse is a wireless, portable mouse that can be used with any device. You can also turn over the mouse to use as a stylus. This can be useful if you decide to get a tablet in the future.

Check the pocket mouse reviews to get more information on this device so that you can decide whether you want one.

Step 4 – Erase if You Need

If you make an error in a drawing, you can remove the part by using the ‘Eraser’. Click on ‘Eraser’ in the toolbar and take the mouse pointer to the error and click the left button without letting go, trace the eraser over the error part.

When you are done, let go of the left button and select a pencil, and then the line or shapes in the toolbar as per your needs. Repeat the process to complete your painting.

Step 5 – Color Your Picture

You can adjust the color of the lines that you have drawn. Select from the various colors shown in the toolbar and draw in the same way as mentioned above. Click on the “paintbrush” sign. Then select the color you want. Fill your picture with the selected color.

Another option for coloring is the paint bucket. Click on the “paint bucket” sign,  then select the color. Bring the mouse pointer to the area you want to color and give a click with the left button. This will color the whole area at a time.

If you use the “paint bucket”, you have to keep in mind to use this option for an enclosed part of the picture. Otherwise, the whole picture will be filled with the color. Nevertheless, the effect can be undone with a right-click.

Conclusion

These are pretty much the basics you need to complete your picture. It may be slightly difficult at first, frustrating even. But it gets better once you get the hang of it.

Now that you know how to draw with a mouse, you only have to practice as only practice gives rise to perfection.Oh! Before we go, one word of advice – clean the mousepad and mouse properly from time to time to keep your workspace neat.
